Ideally, I’d like to have two infected hair stylists work without masks and then see how many get infected. Or not get infected .

(I’m not serious )

R ight... some of this new info in the last few weeks is really pretty dramatic. But honestly, it’s good news that the surface transfer isn’t as big a driver, (which, I admit, I initially had thought.. ) I broke down and got one of those neck gaiter things to go hiking in addition to the normal masks we’ve been using to go to the store, etc. Bad news is that it makes safe restaurant/bar/theater/etc openings even more difficult...

Ohio’s governor just spent 30 minutes begging us to wear masks and to cancel social events. I’ve not seen my parents since February and have been wear masks since at least  April when it was a sweat stained disposable N95 that was likely contaminated with fiberglass. Enough more would likely wear them if he ordered it, but they won’t unless it’s an order, not an ask..

I keep a mask in both cars and one at my desk. I don’t see how this is difficult.

Oh yeah, it isn’t, being contrarian is about making a political statement and pretending to be some brave rebel for truth and justice.  Ugh

What do they do though? Don't go to work, don't get paid. At least in many of the industries that can't do wfh. Unemployment doesn't kick in if they quit or get fired unfortunately

M y girlfriend’s doctor said that if she got COVID she’s looking at about a 70% chance of death (yay for autoimmune diseases). We don our masks, carry lots of disinfectant, and keep to ourselves. At the same time, we’re not locking ourselves up and throwing away the key. We’ve still managed to cross the western half of the country and back and still manage to have fun... but it's fun at a distance.

Chicago is seeing a slide with an increasing positivity rate. Young people are throwing parties, crowding bars, and (to the surprise of absolutely nobody) getting sick, spreading it to older and more vulnerable people.

Not to mention:

1. Foreclosures and Evictions are no longer delayed.

2. The federal stimulus package ends in a couple weeks.

Millions of people are going to be devastated by this. I can see why some are deciding to work sick. It's basically work sick or live on the streets. Terrible ultimatum.

I’d go so far as to say that the correct c hoice is easy for most people—go in to work and try to keep anyone from finding out about any illness or positive Covid-19 test. I can’t fault them in the slightest for that, as now more than ever losing a job is especially brutal.

Super shitty situation.

I find when I need to sneeze or cough that I have to fight an instinctive urge to remove my mask because I don’t want to get it all wet and gross. Which would defeat the purpose of the mask.

Unrelated: I saw this lady in a For-Two the other day. She was about 70, tanned, wearing a fairly short skirt. The car had a very soundy cat-back exhaust, a (looked) custom bright yellow paint job and custom wheels. She could barely figure out how to drive it and last I saw, she was mangling the front air skirt against a curb. I thought of you right away, but only because For-Two and I figured you could probably do a better job at driving it.

Neat. And I think there was a study that showed that transmission by asymptomatic people was actually much rarer than by symptomatic, so, if all that holds true, and sick people keep isolating themselves and everyone else wears masks and washes their damn hands, we might actually stand a chance of seeing this thing burn itself out on its own within the next 24-36 months, even without an effective vaccine or treatment.

Kinja'd!!! Just Jeepin' > ranwhenparked
07/15/2020 at 19:05

Kinja'd!!!1

The asymptomatic thing is a bit hard to nail down because so many of the early symptoms are mild.

Anyway, barring some sort of sea change, I don’t expect mask wearing to become ubiquitous. We’ve gone too far down the political road on that at this point.

The good news is that there’s increasing reason to believe that a vaccine (or getting the virus itself) does lead to long-term resistance. There’s a new p ost on that landing  in a few minutes.

This may make me a horrible person, but I’m really hoping that a majority of the “no mask ‘cuz mah rights!/it’s a librul conspiracy” crowd suffers horribly and dies as result of their selfish idiocy, AND that the GOP suffers an absolutely massive , multi-generational decline as a result.

I’m utterly OK with that.

You’re screwed either way. The landlords/bankers aren’t going to care. The gov’t at the federal level will tell you tough luck, or “find something new”. Hopefully this shows people that it doesn’t matter what side you’re on, they’re willing to let you and your livelihood die.

In the name of science, I propose that every talk radio host that is anti-mask should go get a haircut from someone with Covid, with no mask,  and we see if there is a difference in infection rates.

The testing is shit. I’ve been waiting a week for my results. My sister is now doing contact tracing for the state and was tasked with calling people with their test results from the last week in June. It’s a shit show.

Kinja'd!!!1

Shit show. I feel like that describes the last 6, 7 months.

I hear it’s still difficult to even *get* a test locally. A fair number of my employees have been turned away after heading to the hospital , and I know at least one of them was exhibiting symptoms. My place of work has started temperature checks at the front door, but the cynical side of me wonders if that infrared thermometer isn't just a plastic case with the guts removed. Seems a bit strange that not a single employee has been sent home given how many people are here, and how many viruses travel around here even during the best of times..
